Types of Sound Healing

Types of Sound Healing

Although it is riding a wave of massive popularity right now, sound healing has been around for as long as healers have been in existence.  The process of sound healing involves participants listening to live sounds performed on instruments like gongs, singing bowls and tuning forks as they allow the relaxing vibrations to wash over them, which can result in a variety of responses that can impact our emotional, physical and spiritual selves.

Every unique sound healing session, whether private or as part of a group, is a very personal experience and every individual will have a different reaction to it.  Exalted for its positive therapeutic effects, the tranquil meditative state delivered through sound healing can help clients deal with issues such as sleep disorders, chronic pain, PTSD and anxiety.

Here are some of the most common forms of modern sound healing:

Singing Bowl Healing

Delivering delightfully rich tones, the sounds of singing bowls are able to reach the mind and body on a deep level.  Creating layers of harmony with a distinctive character, they have the power to quiet the mind and allow you to discover a profound sense of inner peace and understanding.  When a group of singing bowls is played together, their sounds develop into one beautiful tone.  Open yourself up to all of the creative possibilities life has to offer you.

Chakra Healing

The energy centers that run through our bodies from head to toe are better known as chakras, which are believed to each have a specific tone associated with them (lower tones match lower chakras, etc).  A popular method of chakra healing is to place singing bowls directly on the points of the body they correspond with and ring them so the body receives the resonance on a deeper level.  When small enough bowls are used, a number of chakras can be treated at the same time.  Another option for chakra healing is for the bowls to be rung above or next to the client.

Sound Bath

This encompassing experience filled with deep vibrations often uses large, heavy singing bowls that are able to hold tones for long periods of time, as well as gongs, tuning forks and other instruments.  The bowls are often placed in the center of the room for a group session or strategically arranged around an individual in a private session.  Typically, participants lie on a mat on the floor with their eyes closed to reach a profound level of relaxation as the sounds penetrate every fiber of their being.

At home, you can even try playing your own singing bowls.  They can be a wonderful tool when you are feeling upset, stressed out or frazzled, and the whole family can benefit from the calming tones they give off.  For a greater sense of well-being, give sound healing a try.
