Looking After Your Hair on Vacation

Looking After Your Hair on Vacation

Anyone looking forward to enjoying a vacation has plenty to think about as they prepare to go away, but keeping your hair under control on the beach or at the pool shouldn’t be one of your main concerns.  However, spending time in the outdoors amongst the wind, humidity, UV rays, chlorine and saltwater can wreak serious havoc on your mane, so consider these tips to keep your hair looking and feeling lustrous and healthy.  That way, you can focus on enjoying your best vacation ever!

Avoid Styling Products

Avoid Styling Products

Removing any harsh styling products like hairsprays or gels from your rotation will help your hair behave better and look natural to boot.  Shampoo only every two or three days (rather than every day) to enhance your natural texture if you have fine or thin hair that lacks volume.  Sea salt sprays and dry shampoos can elevate the beachy look.  However, if you have dry hair be sure to use extra conditioner and a moisturizing styling lotion with shea butter or coconut oil for glossy hair that is gorgeously nourished.

Comb with Caution

This everyday rule is even more important following some time in the breezy ocean air.  The salty humidity can ravage your hair until it is dried out and more prone to breakage, so make sure you only comb after conditioning well and adding a leave-in conditioner to keep your locks protected.  Specially designed combs with rubber-coated tips are great for safely detangling.

Ditch the Dryer

This tip should also be heeded whenever you can and not just on vacation, but you should especially avoid the hairdryer on days spent in the hot sun.  If your hair is on the longer side, a great solution is adding leave-in conditioner to wet hair and putting hair up in a bun, leaving you with beachy waves when you take out the bun after some time drying.

Embrace Coconut Oil

Embrace Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a delicious-smelling beauty multi-tasker that will work wonders in anyone’s hair, regardless of texture.  The ends of your hair will stay hydrated and silky when you rub a small amount of oil between hands and run them through your locks (avoiding the scalp) before heading to the beach.  When your hair is looking parched and ragged, coconut oil is also a fantastic pre-shampoo hair mask to restore luster.

Eat Fat

Healthy fats are miracle workers for the body and help nourish and fortify hair from the inside out for a glossy, durable mane which will handle the harsh abuse the elements dish out with ease.  Eat a diet that features raw, light fats that are easy to digest such as avocados, shredded coconut, nuts, smoothies with coconut oil and salads dressed with olive, flax or hemp oil.

Become Friends with Bobby Pins

Become Friends with Bobby Pins

Bobby pins are extremely useful when you need to control your hair in a major way but still want it to look chic.  Salty, windblown hair tends to be more susceptible to breakage, so bobby pins are an ideal choice because they won’t cause as much damage as hair elastics.  They are quite versatile and work in both short and long hair and can create sleek beach updos like a low ponytail or a sleek bun.  Make sure to stash some of these budget-friendly lifesavers in your beach bag to keep your hair off your face in an attractive way.
