Spirulina - Mexico’s Super Food!

Spirulina – Mexico’s Super Food!

Spirulina! Never heard of it? It has taken the world of wellness by storm and is considered to be one of the globe’s most powerful superfoods, having an extremely high protein and beta-carotene content and ten mixed carotenoids making it a complete “heal all” solution.

Spirulina is a spiral shaped blue-green algae (similar to seaweed and kelp) that grows in fresh water lakes, rivers and ponds. It was a primary source of protein for the Aztec and African populations. It became very popular in the 1970’s where it was first grown commercially in Hawaii where they use ocean chill drying technology to dry the spirulina once it is harvested. In recent years, Mexico has stepped up its game and is now harvesting and producing spirulina that is exported all over the world and is quite affordable.

The superfood has been quoted to have a funky, sea vegetable flavor, and there are many ways to add it to your diet so that you can reap its benefits: Spirulina can be added to any blended fruit based drink and is especially good in green juices first thing in the morning. Some people add a spoonful or two to their baked treats or even include in soups or chowders

If you want to start using spirulina and live in a humid climate, be sure to store your powder or capsules in an airtight container in your refrigerator to avoid your precious stash from turning rancid.

Spirulina is becoming more and more popular despite being one of the oldest and most potent superfoods in history. Grab some next time you are at your health food store or buy some Mexican spirulina on your next visit to paradise and have your hotel bartender add a spoonful to your poolside Bloody Mary.
