Health Benefits of Bathing in the Sea

The inviting water of the sea is of course something we can enjoy today, but did you know that the practice of bathing and soaking in seawater dates back to the ancient Greeks?  Their society highly regarded the mineral-rich water for its health and beauty benefits, and it was popular to soak in pools and hot tubs filled with seawater.  Nowadays, however, most of us like to take a dip directly in the sea when we are on vacation, as we should: it can boost your mood, improve your immune system, moisturize your skin and increase circulation.  Let’s take a closer look at the specific benefits of bathing in the sea:

Boost Your Immune System

Thanks to its natural blend of mineral salts, vital elements, vitamins, amino acids, living microorganisms and trace elements, seawater can generate antibacterial and antibiotic effects that help keep your immune system healthy.  Not unlike human blood plasma, the components of seawater are absorbed and used easily when you swim in it.  The mist from the sea contains negatively charged ions that can improve your immunity when they attach to your lungs.  What’s more, swimming in the sea can open your pores and help your skin absorb the beneficial sea minerals while flushing out toxins that can cause disease.

Increase Circulation

Simply by swimming in the sea, your blood circulation may improve by causing the heart, arteries, veins and capillaries to carry oxygen-rich blood from your heart and throughout your body, which then returns to your heart.  Seawater therapy consisting of bathing or swimming in warm seawater can increase circulation by restoring essential minerals that have been lost due to stress, environmental toxins and unhealthy eating habits.

Restore Well-being

Many people turn to seawater for its overall health and well-being benefits.  Swimming in warm seawater may help the body combat conditions including arthritis, bronchitis, inflammatory disease and asthma, not to mention aches and pains.  Because seawater is rich in magnesium, it can help your muscles relax, lower stress and lull you to sleep.  Magnesium can also calm nerves and soothe irritability.

Beautify Skin

Magnesium-rich seawater can help moisturize your skin and improve its appearance.  Bathing in seawater helps promote and improve hydration of the skin while reducing skin inflammation symptoms like roughness and redness thanks to high amount of magnesium in the water.  You will emerge from the sea with a newfound glow!

The next time you are near the sea, be sure to get in the water to take full advantage of all of its wonderful health benefits.
