Stay Fit on Vacation: Running on Sand

Stay Fit on Vacation: Running on Sand

Staying fit and healthy is a huge priority for many of us, and though it can be hard to keep up the enthusiasm for exercise when you’re on vacation, there are some activities you can do to keep up your routine. If you are vacationing at a beach destination, running on the beach could be a great way to enjoy the destination while working out. Just imagine starting each day energized and relaxed with a metabolism that’s ready to take on all those sweet treats you’ll no doubt be tempted by, or perhaps to burn off the afternoon cocktails before dinner.

Running on Sand

The benefits of running are well known, and running on the beach can be a great way to stay fit even when you’re on vacation. Read on to find out why running on the beach could be the answer to your vacation fitness needs.

Improve Your Overall Health

Obviously regular exercise will go a long way to improving your overall health and wellbeing in both physical and mental terms, but there are specific benefits attached to running, and running on sand in particular. Firstly, when you run your breathing is improved as you must adapt to deliver more oxygen to your lungs in order to combat the lactic acid build-up in your muscles. Secondly, the extra resistance provided by the uneven and pliant surface of the sand will make your legs muscles work harder, thereby contributing to the sculpting of the muscles and the hourly calorie burn of the activity. An added bonus is the fact that the soft surface of the sand is also gentler on your joints as it lessens the impact of each footfall.

More Resistance Means More Calories Burned

More Resistance Means More Calories Burned

As we noted before the extra resistance offered by the unstable surface ups calorie burn by working extra muscles, and working them harder, as your body must fight to keep balance as well as move forward. If you combine this with interval training you get a much more potent work-out than usual as well as a supercharged metabolism which will continue to burn more energy after you finish working out.

Lowers Stress Levels

Stress is a killer, we all know this to be true, and various experts have extolled the virtues of exercise, fresh air, sunshine, and the sounds, sights, and smells of the coast when it comes to reducing stress. It makes perfect sense, then, that combining all of these things would form a potent stress-killing cocktail that is relaxing, restorative, and energizing.

So, take twenty-minutes each morning during your vacation to run along the beach; it really will help you to enjoy every minute of your vacation that much more… you might even come back fitter and healthier than you were when you left
